Why Matthew matters

Matthew opens the New Testament because it most explicitly connects Jesus to Israel's story. The five great teaching blocks (Sermon on the Mount, the missionary discourse, the parables, the community discourse, the Olivet discourse) are structured like the five books of Moses. The Great Commission (28:18–20) is the book's closing summary of what the church now does.
