Christmas Bible trivia, with the Nativity in front of you.

Advent through the Twelve Days — the four-week wait, the angel's announcement, the journey to Bethlehem, the shepherds, the magi. Christmas in the Bible is a tighter story than the carols suggest. Here's a way to read it carefully as a family or a small group.

What Christmas covers in the Bible

The Nativity narratives proper occupy roughly two chapters in Matthew and two in Luke. Mark and John skip the birth and start with the public ministry. Add the Old Testament prophecies that the New Testament authors quote (Isaiah 7:14, Micah 5:2, Numbers 24:17) and you have a tightly knit story across both Testaments — one that a thoughtful round of trivia can illuminate in fifteen minutes.

Which Old Testament prophet foretold that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem?

  1. Isaiah
  2. Micah
  3. Jeremiah
  4. Malachi

"But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel."Micah 5:2

Micah's prophecy, written around 700 BC, is the verse the chief priests quote to Herod when the magi ask where the Christ is to be born (Matthew 2:5–6). The "Ephrathah" qualifier distinguishes Bethlehem in Judah from another Bethlehem in Zebulun.

In which Gospel does the angel Gabriel announce the birth of Jesus to Mary?

  1. Matthew
  2. Mark
  3. Luke
  4. John

"In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary."Luke 1:26-27

Only Luke records the Annunciation to Mary; Matthew gives a parallel account where the angel addresses Joseph instead. Luke's narrative includes the Magnificat (Mary's song) and Zechariah's prophecy, both still used in daily liturgy.

How many gifts did the magi present to the infant Jesus, according to Matthew?

  1. Two
  2. Three
  3. Seven
  4. The number isn't specified

"And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh."Matthew 2:11

Matthew names three gifts but never specifies the number of magi — "we three kings" comes from the gifts, not the text. The magi (Persian or Babylonian astronomer-priests, not "kings") could have been any number; tradition fixes it at three because of the gifts.

Categories that pair well with Advent and Christmas

For a four-week Advent reading plan, run one round each week from these categories. Acquainted suits the youngest in the room; Conversant suits adults.

For families and groups

The most common Christmas use case: family devotional time after the Christmas Eve service, or one round each Sunday of Advent at the dinner table. For families covers the format; how to host a Bible trivia night covers the mechanics for a larger gathering. Custom mode lets you type a specific passage (Luke 1, Luke 2, Matthew 1) and get the round built around exactly that text.
